In a candid interview on Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis pledged a thorough overhaul of the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) if elected as President of the United States. He expressed concern over politically motivated investigations and vowed to restore a single standard of justice to the nation.

Speaking to CNN’s Jake Tapper, DeSantis responded to questions about a letter sent to former President Donald Trump, making him the target of an investigation related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Tapper asked whether Trump should be held accountable if evidence of criminality exists.

DeSantis highlighted the danger of criminalizing political differences in the country and referred to the Manhattan District Attorney’s case against Trump as an example of stretching statutes to target him. He argued that such actions have weaponized the DOJ and FBI against individuals they dislike, with the Russia collusion investigation being a prime example of this misuse.

As a solution, DeSantis emphasized his commitment to restoring confidence in the justice system. If elected president, he pledged to appoint a new FBI director on day one and implement significant changes at the DOJ. He stressed the importance of a single standard of justice, free from political biases, to ensure that Americans from all walks of life have faith in the legal process.

While expressing hope that Trump would not face charges, DeSantis urged everyone to look forward and focus on rebuilding the nation’s institutions. He underscored the need for unity and a forward-looking approach, where the rule of law guides the course of action, irrespective of political affiliations.

In summary, DeSantis outlined his vision of a reformed justice system, free from political interference, as he aspires to lead the country toward a united and equitable future.
