Former Obama adviser David Axelrod is sounding the alarm, telling Democrats to beware of the threat posed by third-party candidates like Cornel West, who is running for president as a Green Party candidate in 2024.
Axelrod disagrees with the majority of Democrats who don’t take threats from candidates like West seriously and thinks they should be treated seriously. Concern over West’s candidacy is growing, and he warns fellow Democrats that “this is going to sneak up on people.” Warnings should be sounded up until the election.
Pennsylvania Democratic Lt. Gov. Austin Davis shares these concerns, arguing that the party as a whole has to be wary of what West’s candidacy could mean. He warns that if these problems aren’t resolved soon, they could become even more disastrous for the party.
In recent weeks, West has been taking aim at Biden, questioning his compassion for the Black community and other issues. He slammed Biden for his ties to segregationist Democratic senators and for his support of the infamous former Mississippi senator John Stennis.
Both Trump and Biden have their shortcomings when it comes to race, and West pointed them out by accusing Biden of “crimes against humanity” against African Americans. He claimed that corrupt “big money” is involved in both parties.
In a recent interview, West not only called for an end to poverty, homelessness, and low wages but also lambasted the administration’s handling of the cocaine incident at the White House.
Concerns within the Democratic party are growing, and West’s strong focus on important issues promises to make the 2024 presidential contest interesting and divisive.
