Carlee Russell’s boyfriend, Thomar Latrell Simmons, has come forward to appeal for an end to the online harassment she has been facing. As suspicions grow, especially within her hometown community, that her kidnapping claims might be a hoax, Simmons urged people to stop cyberbullying her and consider her mental health.
The 25-year-old nursing student disappeared on July 13 after reporting a potential child sighting on a busy highway in Hoover, Alabama. However, when the police arrived at the scene, they found her car with her cellphone and wig inside, but no sign of Russell or a child. Two days later, she reappeared, claiming abduction and captivity. Police, however, found inconsistencies in her account and have been unable to conduct further interviews.
The conversation surrounding Russell’s disappearance has been dominated by her wig, which has sparked suspicions even before the release of her browser history and phone records. Many hair stylists and salon patrons in her community, predominantly black, found it unusual that she would leave her wig behind, as it is a crucial part of her appearance.
According to experts, the wig appeared to be a costly, custom-fitted front-lace wig in a “613” color, a premium shade of platinum blonde. Custom wigs like this are securely glued to the scalp and can take 10-15 minutes to remove. The fact that Russell left it behind in her car raised doubts about the authenticity of her abduction claim among many in the black community.
Hair stylist Kyra Joyner emphasized that a secure wig is unlikely to be removed, especially in a situation of potential danger. She highlighted that leaving a wig on the side of the road would draw attention and concern, making people question the credibility of Russell’s story.
Andrea Townsend and Martha Harton, both from the black community, echoed the sentiment that a black woman would never leave her wig behind and regarded it as a sign that something was not right. For black women, their hair holds immense cultural significance, and the act of leaving the wig behind contradicted their cultural norms and instincts.
The widespread suspicion surrounding the wig has led many in Birmingham to divide into two camps—one that believes Russell’s claims and another that deems them dishonest. The ongoing investigation continues to scrutinize her story, leaving people eager for answers and the truth behind this perplexing disappearance.
