Senator Rand Paul Requests DOJ Inquiry into Dr. Fauci’s Gain-of-Function Assertions

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) took a significant step on Saturday, announcing that he had referred Dr. Anthony Fauci to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for further investigation. The move came after a revelation about a February 2020 email exchange in which Fauci acknowledged knowledge of “scientists in Wuhan University” conducting gain-of-function experiments.

Sharing the contents of the email on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Senator Paul highlighted Fauci’s awareness of concerns raised by “highly credible scientists” regarding unusual mutations in the virus that seemed potentially intentionally inserted, rather than naturally evolved in bats. Fauci, in his email to then-Inspector General Garrett Grisby of the Health and Human Services Department, presented the varying opinions of scientists on the matter without delving into the complexities.

In response to the apparent contradiction between Fauci’s email and his previous statements during a committee hearing, Senator Paul accused Fauci of lying about funding gain-of-function research and sent an official criminal referral to the DOJ, urging a thorough investigation.

As the Senate lacks the authority to bring criminal charges against an individual, the DOJ’s involvement becomes crucial to delve into the matter further.

This development adds further scrutiny to the contentious issue of gain-of-function research in Wuhan. During a Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing in May, Senator Paul had questioned Fauci on the same topic, to which Fauci had asserted that he had never lied before Congress.

Notably, Dr. Anthony Fauci formerly served as the director of both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, but he has since been replaced at each respective agency by two separate individuals.

The situation continues to unfold amid heightened public interest in understanding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Senator Paul’s referral to the DOJ adds a new layer of complexity to the ongoing investigations.
