During a speech in Milwaukee, President Joe Biden appeared to momentarily forget the name of the island of Maui, referring to it as “the one where you see on television all the time.” As the death toll from the wildfires in Hawaii’s Lahaina region climbed to 106, Biden mentioned fires still burning on the Big Island, which is also known as Hawaii. While discussing the ongoing disaster, he struggled to recall the name “Maui.”

Biden acknowledged the wildfires and the devastation they caused, noting that he and his wife, Jill, intended to visit Hawaii soon. He assured that they wanted to ensure all necessary resources were provided without disrupting ongoing recovery efforts.

Previously, Biden had come under criticism for not visiting the disaster-stricken island and for responding with “no comment” when asked about the tragedy during a visit to the beach in Delaware.

The disaster relief efforts included assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which provided displaced residents with financial support for essentials like food, water, medical supplies, and housing. Additionally, the Biden administration sought an additional $12 billion in funding for the government’s disaster relief fund.

As search and identification efforts continued for the victims of the wildfires, a mobile morgue unit was deployed to assist officials in processing remains. The Department of Health and Human Services deployed a team to aid in identifying victims through DNA samples.

Despite challenges, including a forecast of storms and concerns about ongoing infrastructure weaknesses, authorities continued their efforts to support affected residents and rebuild the devastated areas.

The wildfires had a devastating impact on Lahaina, causing extensive property damage and displacement of residents. The community faced challenges related to power outages, compromised cellphone service, and the potential for toxic byproducts remaining in the environment.

While Biden’s remarks indicated his commitment to assisting the affected areas, his momentary lapse in remembering the name of the island highlighted the complexity and gravity of the situation in Hawaii.
