In a significant and meticulously executed operation, law enforcement authorities managed to seize nearly 200 pounds of methamphetamine at a prominent border crossing linking California and Mexico. The individual at the center of the operation, a 26-year-old U.S. citizen returning from Mexico, found himself subject to an unexpected vehicle inspection conducted by customs agents. This revelation comes from an official news release issued by the US Customs and Border Protection on a recent Friday. The vehicle in question was a 2020 model year pickup truck, marking the backdrop of this unfolding saga.

Upon detecting what they termed as “irregularities” within the confines of the vehicle, law enforcement promptly dispatched canine units to delve further into the situation. The collaborative efforts of these diligent teams ultimately bore fruit, as they unearthed a staggering 235 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $235,000. The ingenious concealment of this illicit substance spanned across multiple compartments of the vehicle, including the spare tire, all four doors, tailgate, engine compartment, center console, and the backseat area.

Roque Caza, the Area Port Director for Calexico, underscored the operation’s gravity, stating, “This intricate smuggling operation serves as a stark reminder that our CBP officers remain unwaveringly vigilant, consistently thwarting perilous and unlawful endeavors.”

Subsequent to the successful seizure, law enforcement took the driver into custody and subsequently transferred him to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further comprehensive inquiry.

Calexico’s border crossing has not been unfamiliar with the perils of drug smuggling. In a parallel operation transpiring in May, vigilant border patrol authorities uncovered 78 packets of fentanyl, collectively weighing 109.17 pounds. These packets, meticulously concealed within various compartments of a vehicle, encompassed the rear quarter panels, doors, seats, and remarkably, even the speaker box.

This episode adds to a series of victorious battles against narcotics smuggling at the Calexico West Port of Entry. In a separate investigation, agents stumbled upon three packages harboring 15.30 pounds of methamphetamine, ingeniously stowed below a vehicle’s undercarriage, translating to an estimated street value of $100,600. Further, a traveler’s backpack yielded six packets of methamphetamine, totaling 7.45 pounds and boasting an estimated street value of $16,390.

As of the conclusion of June 2023, Border Patrol’s efforts have yielded encounters with approximately 1.8 million undocumented immigrants. A remarkable total of 412,000 pounds of illicit substances have been apprehended thus far in the year, with a remarkable feat of 43,600 pounds seized in the month of June alone, illustrating the unwavering commitment of border patrol officials.
