Trump Team Demands Apology from DeSantis for Hillary Clinton Analogy

Former President Donald Trump has taken a forceful stance against Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, a fellow Republican, following DeSantis’ comments that seemed to demean Trump’s supporters. The exchange has ignited a back-and-forth between the two, reminiscent of political rivalries seen in the past.

The turmoil began when Trump demanded an apology from DeSantis, who he referred to as the GOP front-runner, after DeSantis made a remark about Trump’s base. DeSantis reportedly referred to Trump’s supporters as “listless vessels,” implying a lack of enthusiasm or passion. This choice of words struck a nerve with Trump’s team, prompting a reaction from the former president himself.

In response, Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Make America Great Again Inc., drew a parallel between DeSantis and Hillary Clinton, who famously referred to Trump’s supporters as “deplorables” during the 2016 presidential campaign. The statement accused DeSantis of abandoning the very voters who played a significant role in electing him as Florida’s governor in 2018.

Leavitt’s statement emphasized the dedication of Trump’s supporters, labeling them as “patriots.” She suggested that DeSantis’ recent comments might be a sign of pressure stemming from his position in the polls, where he currently holds the third-place spot.

DeSantis, however, defended his stance, maintaining that the Republican movement should be based on conservative values rather than the personality of any single figure. He criticized what he perceived as a tendency among some Republicans to blindly follow Trump’s lead without evaluating their own principles and beliefs.

Bryan Griffin, the press secretary for DeSantis’ campaign, used social media to address the controversy. He asserted that Trump, along with certain congressional endorsers, could also be characterized as “listless vessels” due to their perceived sense of entitlement to voters’ support. Griffin’s tweet also contended that DeSantis believed in earning voters’ trust rather than taking it for granted.

The dispute between Trump and DeSantis unfolds against the backdrop of the upcoming Republican primaries. Despite facing multiple felony charges resulting from separate criminal indictments, Trump remains a dominant figure in early polling. A significant majority (54.4%) of Republican voters have indicated their support for Trump in the primaries, as indicated by data from FiveThirtyEight. DeSantis trails significantly behind with 15.4%, followed by Vivek Ramaswamy (7.9%), former Vice President Mike Pence (5.1%), and Nikki Haley (3.7%).

The exchange between Trump and DeSantis underscores the ongoing complexities within the Republican Party. While Trump’s influence and popularity remain undeniable, other figures like DeSantis are attempting to carve out their own positions and emphasize their dedication to conservative principles. As the primary season approaches, the dynamics within the GOP continue to evolve, setting the stage for an intriguing battle for the party’s nomination.
