Former NY Police Chief Faces Serious Charges

James Burke, a former New York police chief who has a history of arrests on accusations of assault and solicitation, has been arrested once again, this time on allegations of sexual misconduct. The 58-year-old man was brought into jail following allegations that he solicited sexual favors from a park ranger working undercover. He is currently being investigated for criminal solicitation, indecent exposure, public lewdness, and providing a sex act as a form of payment.

An undercover operation was carried out by Suffolk County park rangers after they received several complaints about persons who were soliciting sex in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Farmingville. This led to the arrest of the suspect. Reportedly, upon his arrest, Burke sought to claim his previous status as a law enforcement officer in order to avoid repercussions; however, the ranger who arrested him did not appear to be aware of Burke’s identity.

Previously, James Burke worked as the chief of police for Suffolk County from 2012 to 2015, and it was during this time that he handled the original investigation into the killings that occurred at Gilgo Beach. However, his conduct of the case came under fire since it was believed that he impeded the involvement of the FBI in the investigation when it was discovered that four women’s remains had been discovered close to Gilgo Beach on Long Island. In spite of the suspicions, an additional person was eventually taken into custody and prosecuted in connection with the killings.

In 2016, Burke was found guilty of attacking a guy who was being held by the police and received a sentence of 46 months in prison. It was stated that Burke’s victim had taken a suitcase from his vehicle that contained sexually graphic things. As a result of this event, Burke resigned from his position as chief of police, and federal prosecutors subsequently charged him with assault and cover-up for the incident.

Prior to Burke’s promotion to the position of chief of police, he was the subject of allegations that he had engaged in sexual activity with a prostitute while driving his patrol car. This connection to sex workers also led to attempts to link him to the deaths that took place at Gilgo Beach; however, no evidence was discovered to support these accusations when they were investigated.

Another person was taken into custody in July on suspicion of being involved in the killings that took place at Gilgo Beach. In accordance with a strategy that seeks to reduce the notoriety that may be gained by mass murderers, the authorities have chosen not to identify the suspect. Given that the suspect’s family was abroad at the time of the crimes, there is some speculation that the suspect may have carried out the murders at the residence that he owned. This would provide him power over the surroundings and enable him with easy access to the items that were discovered near the victims at Gilgo Beach.

The current arrest of Burke is yet another chapter in his troubled past, which involves engagement with police enforcement, legal problems, and contentiousness.
