President Biden announced on Friday his intention to request additional funding from Congress for the development of a new COVID-19 vaccine, and he suggested that he may consider making the vaccine mandatory for everyone, regardless of their vaccination history.
While vacationing in the Lake Tahoe area, President Biden addressed reporters and confirmed that he had signed off on a proposal to present to Congress, seeking more funding for the development of a necessary and effective new COVID-19 vaccine. He also indicated that it is likely that the new vaccine will be recommended for everyone, even those who have previously been vaccinated.
The initial $40 million funding request submitted to Congress on August 11 did not mention funding for COVID-19, focusing instead on allocations for various purposes such as Ukraine support and border enforcement.
Officials are preparing for an updated COVID-19 vaccine that targets a specific variant of the omicron strain, known as XBB.1.5. This new vaccine will differ from the current combination shots, which blend the original coronavirus strain with last year’s common omicron variants. As the virus continues to mutate, regular updates to vaccines are expected to remain necessary.
The rollout of the new vaccine is planned to coincide with the annual fall COVID-19 shot. Major vaccine manufacturers like Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax are working on producing doses of the XBB update. However, regulatory approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will be required before these vaccines can be administered.
This proposed booster program comes nearly a year after President Biden’s declaration in September 2022 that the COVID-19 pandemic was “over,” although he acknowledged that efforts were still ongoing. The potential mandate for the new vaccine raises questions about public health, individual choice, and the ongoing challenges posed by the virus.
