Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has criticized Republican House members who are obstructing the passage of spending bills necessary to keep the U.S. government running. Gingrich expressed his concerns during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, highlighting the challenges faced by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the potential consequences of playing political games with these bills.

Gingrich pointed out that McCarthy faces difficulties due to the varying demands of Senate Republicans who want more spending, a president seeking trillions in additional funding, and House Democrats unwilling to compromise. He emphasized the importance of passing a rule to bring these bills to the floor for debate.

The former Speaker mentioned a few Republican representatives, including Congressman Matt Gaetz, whom he described as “deranged” for openly opposing McCarthy and seeking his removal. Gingrich believed that such divisive actions could ultimately harm the party’s unity and ability to get things done.

Gingrich also criticized the House Freedom Caucus, suggesting that their actions were “cheerfully screwing things up” and that more moderate Republicans might eventually prevail.

In conclusion, Gingrich stressed that the obstruction by certain Republican members was not only detrimental to the party but also harmful to the country. He argued that it diverted attention away from important issues related to President Biden’s administration and impeded progress on necessary spending bills.

The interview with Gingrich highlights the internal divisions within the Republican Party and the challenges faced by leadership in maintaining party cohesion while addressing pressing legislative matters.
