As a result of heightened tensions in a number of different regions throughout the world, the United States Department of State has issued a “worldwide caution” for American citizens who are abroad. In view of the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Hamas, the advice issues a warning that there is a possibility that terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or other violent activities would be carried out against American individuals and interests. In addition, there is a particular travel warning for Lebanon that advises against going there owing to the unstable security situation caused by Israel and Hezbollah or other armed militant groups trading rockets, missiles, and artillery fire.

Because of safety concerns, the State Department has given permission for the voluntary, temporary departure of family members of U.S. government staff and select non-emergency personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. This departure will take place temporarily. It is strongly recommended that tourists stay away from protests and remain vigilant at all times, particularly in the immediate proximity of major meetings or demonstrations, as some of these events have turned violent. In addition, there have been exchanges of rockets, missiles, and artillery between Israel and Hezbollah, which have had an impact on southern Lebanon, specifically the border area, which citizens of the United States are strongly encouraged to avoid.
