NY AG Blasts Trump After Dramatic Court Exit

In a recent upheaval at New York State’s highest court, former President Donald Trump made a startling exit, raising both hands in exasperation and promptly leaving. This unexpected move came shortly after Michael Cohen, a former ally turned adversary, testified that Trump hadn’t instructed him to overstate the worth of his assets.

Following his abrupt departure, Trump voiced his frustration to the press, claiming, “Based on the testimony, we should be declared the winners of this trial immediately.”

However, New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, swiftly countered Trump’s assertions. She stated that Cohen’s testimony in no way weakened the state’s case against the former President.

In a twist of events, Trump faced a penalty of $10,000 for breaching a partial communication ban. This action was taken by Judge Engoron after determining that Trump’s mid-trial statements to journalists broke the imposed gag order. This wasn’t the first time Trump faced such a penalty; he’d previously been fined $5,000 due to an inappropriate social media post that remained on his campaign website, despite being removed from his Truth Social media platform upon the judge’s request.

The intense atmosphere heightened when Judge Engoron summoned Trump post-lunch to elucidate his earlier statements. Trump, upon taking the stand, sought to clarify his comments about the judge and his clerk, Allison Greenfield, by stating that they were aimed at Cohen. However, Engoron found Trump’s explanation lacking and cautioned him against further violations.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Judge Engoron expressed his reasons for imposing the gag order, emphasizing the importance of safety.

The courtroom drama continued as defense lawyers attempted to question Cohen’s reliability by reminding the court of his past criminal convictions, including multiple counts of tax evasion. Attorney Alina Habba went on to suggest that Cohen consistently misused his power and influence for dishonest means. Cohen, on his part, acknowledged some of his past mistakes but defended his stance on the current case.

The ongoing trial is centered around allegations put forth by Attorney General James, accusing Trump and his business of misleading financial institutions and other parties by significantly exaggerating his assets. James contends that Trump consistently inflated the worth of his key properties, such as the Mar-a-Lago resort and his Trump Tower residence in Manhattan, sometimes by as much as $2 billion. The legal proceedings, which might extend into December, could potentially result in Trump facing penalties up to $250 million and a potential ban on his business activities within New York.

The former President, however, remains defiant, terming the entire legal challenge as a politically motivated “witch hunt” against him. Expressing his sentiments on Truth Social, Trump asserted that the case lacked merit and called on state officials to turn their attention to more pressing issues, like escalating crime rates.
