While the civil fraud trial against Donald Trump continues, his legal team has launched a vicious personal attack.

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team has adopted a high-stakes tactic in the middle of a heated $250 million civil fraud trial by launching a scathing personal attack on the New York attorney general, Letitia James. Allegations that Trump inflated his net worth and property valuations to acquire loans on advantageous conditions are at the heart of this trial, which has been the subject of frequent rebukes from the presiding judge, Judge Arthur Engoron.

Alina Habba, Trump’s attorney, did not hold back when she slammed Attorney General Letitia James on television, saying, “She’s just not that bright.” I’m sorry to tell this, but I’ve seen their case and it’s not a good one. Habba’s comments followed a dramatic court day, in which Judge Engoron reprimanded the ex-president and his counsel. Trump himself took the stand, but his courtroom demeanor earned repeated warnings not to treat the proceedings like a political rally.

During his testimony, Trump personally lambasted Judge Engoron, whom he accused of bias, and insulted Attorney General James as a “political hack.” Trump strongly denied any wrongdoing, going so far as to accuse Letitia James of being the one committing fraud. He argued that his accusers were making up lies about him.

Trump faces multiple legal challenges as he seeks another presidential run, including the pending civil litigation in New York. Inflating his wealth as he was expanding his real estate empire, Trump was found guilty of fraud by Judge Engoron. Penalties for these offenses are at issue in the current trial.

In his defense of Trump, Habba said that the prosecution cherry-picked the lowest appraisals possible to establish their case. She mentioned that it’s usual practice for banks to say that a property is only worth the loan amount when issuing a loan. In her perspective, James needed to educate herself on these subjects.

Habba’s allegations did not stop with Attorney General James; she also accused Judge Engoron of having preconceived beliefs about Trump’s guilt and alleged that he aimed to quiet the former president throughout his testimony.

During a brief intermission in the proceedings, Habba vented her anger at the judge’s demeanor, calling him “unhinged” and saying that he would not tolerate her speaking up against what she saw as injustice. She bemoaned the deterioration of the American court system and democracy, claiming that the judge did not accept President Trump’s version of events because it did not conform to the accepted narrative.

Trump’s aggressive remarks stoked tensions even further, especially regarding the worth of Mar-a-Lago. The court ruled that Mar-a-Lago was only valued around $18 million, despite financial figures that claimed it was worth more over $500 million.

Trump’s legal team has been very combative throughout the trial, using both in-court arguments and public statements to staunchly defend their client. The political ramifications of Trump’s possible return to presidential politics are significant, but the outcome of the judicial processes is still unclear.
