The activity came to light when it was reported that Gibson had participated in live sessions with her husband on the adult website Chaturbate, which were subsequently archived on a public platform. Despite announcing her candidacy in July 2022, it appears Gibson maintained activity on the site, with one image uploaded in the following month, as reported by The Washington Post.
With over 5,770 followers on Chaturbate, Gibson was seen requesting “tokens” for performances, mentioning that she was fundraising for a cause. The discovery of her online activities led to a heated controversy, with Gibson denouncing the exposure as a violation of her privacy and a targeted attack by her political adversaries.
She stated to CNN, “This is nothing but an illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me.” Gibson accused her opponents and their Republican supporters of stooping to unprecedented levels, committing what she described as a “sex crime” to undermine her campaign.
Despite the controversy, David Owen declined to comment on Gibson’s activities, stating to NBC 12 that the voters would decide if the revelations were disqualifying. Instead, he chose to focus on his campaign objectives.
In the wake of the scandal, while Gibson’s fundraising saw a brief upsurge, her support among voters showed a decline, with one poll indicating a significant trailing behind Owen.
The Virginia GOP capitalized on the scandal, sending out mailers with images from Gibson’s adult content streams, cautioning recipients about explicit material and age-appropriateness. These actions were met with a swift rebuke from the Gibson campaign, which accused Owen and the GOP of diverting attention from their own controversial policies and engaging in desperate political tactics.
Gibson’s campaign remained resolute despite the attacks, vowing to continue fighting for the community and emphasizing the voters’ exhaustion with such extreme political strategies. The campaign underscored their dedication to the community and the belief that voters would not be swayed by the salacious mailers or the smear campaign against Gibson.
