In a strategic move underscoring the importance of South Carolina in the Democratic political landscape, Vice President Kamala Harris visited Columbia, South Carolina, this Friday. Accompanied by prominent Democratic Congressman Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, Harris undertook a significant task: formally submitting the necessary documents to ensure President Joe Biden’s inclusion in the South Carolina Democratic presidential primary.

This visit marks a pivotal moment, reflecting on the critical role South Carolina played in revitalizing President Biden’s campaign during the 2020 primaries. The state, known for its decisive influence, was instrumental in Biden’s comeback, particularly after his less-than-stellar performances in early voting states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. Clyburn’s pivotal endorsement, coupled with the strong support from African American voters, was a turning point in Biden’s journey to the Oval Office.

The filing of the paperwork, which took place just before 10 a.m., was confirmed by White House officials. Vice President Harris, in her remarks, highlighted South Carolina’s crucial role in their 2020 victory. “South Carolina paved our path to the White House,” Harris noted. “The resilience, dedication, and tireless spirit of the people here and across the state were key factors in our success.”

Expressing gratitude, Harris added, “We’re here to say thank you. Now, let’s make it happen once more.”

Echoing these sentiments, Biden’s campaign spokesperson, Michael Tyler, emphasized South Carolina’s centrality to the Democratic Party. “The state’s Democrats are the party’s cornerstone, propelling Biden to the nomination and the presidency,” Tyler stated. He added, “With Vice President Harris and Congressman Clyburn endorsing President Biden in what has become the nation’s first primary, we are ready to mobilize the Biden-Harris coalition in South Carolina to confront and overcome MAGA extremism in 2024.”

However, President Biden’s decision to prioritize South Carolina in the primary calendar has sparked unintended repercussions, including the emergence of a new challenger. Shortly after Biden’s decision to bypass New Hampshire’s non-compliant primary, Congressman Dean Phillips from Minnesota threw his hat into the presidential race.

Despite efforts by Biden and the Democratic National Committee to restructure the primary calendar, New Hampshire has resisted. Secretary of State David Scanlan, citing a state law that insists on New Hampshire hosting the nation’s first presidential primary, announced non-compliance with the DNC’s schedule. Although the New Hampshire primary may not yield delegates under the new DNC rules, a strong performance by Phillips or any of the other candidates could potentially weaken Biden’s support as the election cycle progresses.
