On Saturday, as President Biden was returning to his Wilmington home following a Veterans’ Day address, a protest titled the “Delaware Palestine March” was underway nearby. The demonstrators, who gathered in the same area, were vocal in their criticisms of President Biden, accusing him of being complicit in genocide. They chanted slogans, including “Biden, Biden, you can’t hide! We charge you with genocide!”
The protesters’ main demand was for President Biden to advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza amidst the ongoing military operations by Israel in the Hamas-controlled region. Prominent among the speakers at the protest was Linda Sarsour, an activist of Palestinian descent.
The United States government has acknowledged that Israel has agreed to temporary halts in military action to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, both the U.S. and Israel have expressed opposition to a full ceasefire at this time.
The situation in Gaza remains tense, with reports of numerous casualties. The health ministry in Gaza, run by Hamas, has reported over 10,300 deaths, though these figures do not differentiate between Palestinian civilians and members of Hamas. Additionally, there are concerns about approximately 240 hostages in Gaza, including an estimated 10 Americans.
This protest against President Biden’s policies in the Wilmington area highlights the ongoing international debate and concern over the situation in Gaza and the broader Israel-Palestine conflict.
