Representative Dean Phillips (D-MN) has issued a public apology for his recent comments about Vice President Kamala Harris amid his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2024. Phillips, who is challenging President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris, expressed regret for relaying third-party criticisms of Harris.
In a statement released on social media, Phillips acknowledged his misstep, stating, “In an interview with The Atlantic, I shared my positive experiences with Vice President Harris. However, I inadvertently echoed others’ opinions, which was inappropriate. I take full responsibility and extend my sincere apologies to Vice President Harris and anyone else affected by such situations.”
Phillips, who is currently in his third term in Congress, had previously indicated in an interview that some individuals believe Harris is not adequately equipped for her role as Vice President. However, he clarified that these were not his personal observations. “My personal interactions with Vice President Harris have always been impressive. She has demonstrated kindness, thoughtfulness, and decency,” Phillips emphasized during a CNN interview.
He further explained that his campaign’s focus isn’t about individual criticisms but about addressing broader concerns within the Democratic party and its strategy to secure victory in future elections. “My campaign is grounded in the belief that while President Biden is a respectable figure, recent polls suggest a desire for new leadership. I reached out to potential challengers before deciding to run myself,” Phillips said.
In his discussion on CNN, Phillips encouraged a robust and open Democratic primary process, “I believe in the vitality of our democracy and encourage Vice President Harris and others to participate actively in the primaries. The water’s warm, and our democracy thrives on diverse voices and choices,” he concluded.
