Stephen Colbert, the renowned host of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” has unexpectedly announced a hiatus from his show due to an urgent medical issue. Colbert took to his show’s Instagram account to share the news of his recent surgery.

“Hi everyone, I have some regrettable news — I’m taking a sudden break from work this week. You might guess I’ve had too much Thanksgiving turkey, but in reality, I’ve just had surgery for a ruptured appendix,” he posted.

The condition, known for its potential severity, required Colbert to undergo immediate surgery, reminiscent of the ailment that claimed the life of the legendary Harry Houdini.

While Colbert withheld details of the timing and circumstances leading to his hospital visit, the announcement has led to the cancellation of a week’s worth of shows for the CBS late-night program, which he has helmed since taking over from David Letterman in 2015.

Scheduled guests, including notable figures such as Jennifer Garner, Baz Luhrmann, Patrick Stewart, Barbra Streisand, and Kelsey Grammer, will have to wait for another opportunity to appear on the show.

In his Instagram message, Colbert expressed his gratitude toward his medical team and his family’s support during this time, making a particular mention of his wife Evelyn “Evie” McGee Colbert, to whom he’s been married since 1993, and their three children.

Colbert, known for his wit, couldn’t resist concluding his health update with a touch of humor, quipping about his appendix and pancreas’s new ‘responsibilities.’

Fans and followers responded with well-wishes and personal anecdotes, urging Colbert to prioritize his recovery and assuring him of their anticipation for his return to television.

“The Late Show” has not yet responded to requests for further comment on the situation, leaving fans watching for updates on Colbert’s recovery and the show’s schedule.
