In a fiery exchange during their televised debate, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis traded barbs, with Newsom issuing a sharp prediction about DeSantis’ presidential aspirations. During the event, which took place in Georgia and was moderated by Fox News personality Sean Hannity, Newsom asserted, “One thing we share is that neither of us will be the standard-bearer for our parties come 2024.”

DeSantis, who is considered a potential candidate for the Republican presidential nomination alongside figures like Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, and Chris Christie, was quick to allude to Newsom’s own speculated presidential intentions. Amidst the debate, Newsom challenged DeSantis, suggesting he was aiming for the presidency, to which DeSantis retorted, “So are you, you’re just not admitting it.”

The California governor didn’t hold back in his critique of DeSantis, linking him to what he called the “politics of grievance” associated with former President Trump. DeSantis, on the other hand, showcased his track record in Florida, emphasizing the effectiveness of conservative governance and calling for a choice between “freedom and failure.”

The exchange underscored the growing speculation about both governors’ political futures, with Newsom deflecting claims of running a covert presidential campaign in the event President Biden does not seek re-election due to health reasons. The debate offered a glimpse into the possible dynamics of the upcoming presidential race, with both governors positioning themselves as leading voices of their respective parties.
