A Macy’s store in Philadelphia is currently shut down following a fatal stabbing incident involving two of its security guards. The company confirmed the temporary closure to FOX Business, expressing profound sorrow over the tragic event at the Center City location this past Monday.
Details on the store’s reopening remain unspecified, with Macy’s deferring to law enforcement for further updates. Following the incident, both security guards were urgently transported to Jefferson Hospital. Tragically, a 30-year-old male guard succumbed to his injuries after being stabbed in the neck. His colleague, a 23-year-old male, is receiving treatment for neck and face wounds and is reported to be in stable condition.
The attack reportedly occurred shortly after 11 a.m. inside the store. According to Philadelphia Police, the assailant, initially involved in a theft of hats, was confronted by the security personnel. After a brief altercation, he was released but returned soon after, targeting the guards with a knife.
SEPTA transit police apprehended the suspect at Somerset Station. Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stafford provided an account of the incident, noting the rapid and violent nature of the attack. He revealed that one of the guards had been a recent hire at Macy’s and confirmed they were unarmed.
This Macy’s location, situated near City Hall in the bustling Center City, has experienced a notable increase in retail thefts, with over 250 reported cases this year. As the investigation continues, the store remains closed, with future updates on its status expected from Macy’s representatives.
