Heritage Action Urges Firm Stance Against Biden’s Ukraine-Israel Request

The Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative organization, has recently urged House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, to reject President Biden’s request for an additional $106 billion in aid. Dr. Kevin Roberts, President of Heritage Action, wrote an open letter to Johnson, denouncing the proposal as a “corrupt, unaffordable end-of-year deal.” He expressed particular concern about the nearly $61 billion allocated to Ukraine in the aid package, which also includes funding for humanitarian efforts and U.S. border issues.

Roberts criticized the potential Republican support for the bill, arguing that it lacked a clear end goal and detailed strategy for rebuilding Ukraine’s war-torn economy. Speaker Johnson, known for securing $14 billion for Israel in a separate bill, has shown hesitance towards the proposed $106 billion package. He supports linking Ukraine aid with stricter asylum regulations and enhanced border security measures.

The aid package has sparked debate, especially as Ukrainian leaders recently visited Capitol Hill, seeking support against Russia’s aggression. The White House’s Office of Management and Budget warned of dire consequences for Ukraine without the additional U.S. aid. However, Johnson insists on significant reforms in border security before approving more funds for Ukraine.

The growing skepticism among conservatives, particularly those in the House and Senate, centers around the continuation of foreign aid without a clear resolution to the conflict. Roberts advocates for a comprehensive approach, involving EU support for Ukraine, transparent military spending, and a defined objective in Ukraine.

Highlighting the intersection of foreign aid and conservative principles within the GOP, Roberts reiterated the demands outlined in the House GOP’s H.R. 2, which focuses on illegal immigration and border issues while also addressing aid to Ukraine. His recent discussion with Johnson on these matters indicates an ongoing, complex debate within the Republican party regarding foreign assistance and national policy priorities.
