In response to remarks made by Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., a member of the “Squad,” during a House Oversight Subcommittee on Health hearing, Riley Gaines, a well-known NCAA swimmer and supporter of women’s sports, responded forcefully. Gaines vigorously refuted Lee’s designation of testimonials disparaging transgender males playing women’s sports as “transphobic.”

Despite emphasizing that inclusiveness in sports shouldn’t come at the expense of safety and fairness, Gaines countered in her message. She declared, “Inclusion cannot be prioritized over safety and fairness,” and insisted that actions seen to be harmful or unfair must be stopped. Gaines forcefully stated, “And ranking member Lee, if my testimony makes me ‘transphobic,’ then I believe your opening monologue makes you a misogynist.”

After a quick conversation, Lee decided against trying to have Gaines’ comments removed from the record.

This debate took place during a hearing regarding proposed Title IX modifications from the Biden administration. Transgender athletes may be able to participate in women’s sports under the amended definition of sexual discrimination, which also includes gender identity.

The Importance of Protecting Female Athletics and Title IX hearing is scheduled to take place on March 23. Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., the chairwoman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Health, announced that Gaines, along with other female leaders such as Sarah Parshall Perry from the Heritage Foundation and former head women’s lacrosse coach Kim Russell of Oberlin College, will testify.

With a strong dedication to safeguarding women’s chances, safety, and privacy, McClain has been outspoken in her criticism of the proposed Title IX amendments, calling them harmful to women’s sports.

Gaines, who qualified for the Olympics twice, has been a vocal opponent of letting biological male athletes participate in women’s sports. Her previous criticism of the Biden administration’s proposed Title IX modifications, which she called a “abomination” and a “rewrite” of the regulation, was directed at the protection of women in sports.

Gaines and other witnesses will discuss the potential effects of these regulation changes on safeguards and equity for female athletes across the country during the next hearing, which will examine the ramifications of these changes for women’s sports.
