Representatives Brandon Williams of New York and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, both Republicans in Congress, received phony emergency calls on Christmas Day, a practice known as “swatting.” Social media outlets were utilized by both representatives to share their experiences, emphasizing how disruptive these instances were.
Rep. Williams thanked the responding cops for their professionalism as he shared on social media about his encounter. “This afternoon, someone swatted our house. I appreciate the Deputies and Troopers who got in touch with me ahead of time. They took handmade cookies and spiced almonds with them! “Happy Christmas to all of you!” he wrote. He added that the event was being aggressively investigated by the local law enforcement as well as the Capitol Police.
“Swatting” is the practice of phoning emergency services in an attempt to get a big police response to a particular place. This risky joke has the potential to put law enforcement and the victims in dangerous and uncomfortable situations.
Rep. Greene also shared her experience with a swatting event after Williams’ post, noting that it wasn’t her first time going through such a thing. “That was a swattee.” I think this is the eighth time. With my family here on Christmas,” Greene said.
Fox News Digital was informed by the Rome Police Department in Georgia that they got an emergency call on Christmas morning pertaining to Greene’s property. But while en way, the police’s reaction was shelved after coordinating with Greene’s security detail verified that there was no actual emergency.
Greene thanked the local police after experiencing several instances of swatting in the past, including fabricated claims of gunfire at her residence. “This shouldn’t be happening to my local police, who are the best in the world. My family and I are ecstatically celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and I am so grateful for them.” Greene’s post came to an end.
These events highlight the difficulties and risks associated with swatting, affecting public personalities and taxing the resources of law enforcement. Both representatives expressed their gratitude for the prompt and expert way that law enforcement handled these false alarms in their reactions.
