On Christmas morning, a shocking incident unfolded at Grand Central Terminal in New York City when two teenage tourists, aged 14 and 16, were stabbed while dining with their family. The assailant, identified as 36-year-old Steven Hutcherson, reportedly harbored a history of mental health issues and prior arrests.
The attack occurred at the Tartinery restaurant in the Grand Central Dining Concourse around 11:25 a.m. According to police sources, Hutcherson, in a disturbing outburst, declared his desire for “all white people dead” before launching his attack on the unsuspecting teenagers. The older girl suffered a stab wound to her back, affecting her lungs, while the younger was stabbed in the thigh. Fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening.
Hutcherson’s behavior prior to the attack was erratic. He had entered the restaurant, demanding a table without intending to order anything. Upon being refused, he became agitated, singled out the victims’ family, and then proceeded to carry out the stabbing.
Responding swiftly, transit police officers apprehended Hutcherson within a minute of the incident. He surrendered the knife immediately upon their arrival. The scene was described as chaotic by witnesses, with people running in panic.
Charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child, Hutcherson was awaiting arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court. The victims, who were visiting from South America and staying at a nearby Midtown hotel, were treated at Bellevue Hospital and released the same day.
Hutcherson’s criminal history includes 17 prior arrests and multiple instances where he was classified as an “emotionally disturbed person.” His most recent arrest before this incident was in November for allegedly threatening to shoot a stranger in the Bronx.
This incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in dealing with repeat offenders and individuals with mental health issues. The attack on the teenage tourists has brought to light the challenges of ensuring public safety, particularly in high-traffic areas like Grand Central Terminal.
