Recent events inside the House of Representatives’ Republican leadership have seen Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) publicly voice his intense displeasure with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.). In a clear statement on “The Steve Deace Show,” Roy said he is thinking about moving to remove Johnson from his position as leader and that it is “not off the table.”

Roy, who has a reputation for taking conservative positions, expressed his displeasure by declaring, “I’m leaving it on the table. I won’t promise to go file it tomorrow. I’m not saying I won’t submit it the next day.” He underlined that in order to address these problems, the Speaker must acknowledge the dissatisfaction among his colleagues and the need for communication. Roy’s position is especially important because, in October, he was not one of the eight House Republicans who supported Democrats in ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

Roy is mostly unhappy because Johnson recently reached a consensus on government spending with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). The funding plan, which essentially keeps the commitments made by President Biden and Senator McCarthy during last year’s debt ceiling negotiations, was roundly slammed by him, calling it “garbage.” Roy voiced skepticism on Johnson’s dedication to achieving conservative policy gains in upcoming budget initiatives.

The aforementioned agreement contains an extra $69 billion as a result of a side agreement between McCarthy and Biden, in addition to proposing a statutory cap of $1.59 trillion for discretionary federal funding. Speaking to the media, Johnson announced that he had worked out an additional $16 billion in budgetary reductions for the current fiscal year in order to offset some of the increased costs.

Johnson said on Tuesday night, “This is not what we all want,” while acknowledging the limitations that the agreement was reached under. If we controlled both legislatures and the White House, this would not be the best bargain we could get. However, given the circumstances, this is the best bargain we could arrange.” He highlighted the agreed-upon budget ceiling as a basis for advancing policy initiatives, and expressed optimism about future legislative triumphs.

Roy, though, continued to doubt that major policy advancements could be made within the confines of the present budget. He voiced uncertainty about the possibility of such results, although he did imply that he would be open to change his mind if the spending resulted in significant policy advantages.
