Following the New Hampshire primary, former President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to potential donors considering supporting his GOP primary rival, Nikki Haley. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that any donors who contribute to Haley’s campaign will be “permanently barred” from the MAGA movement.
This declaration came after Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina and UN Ambassador, decided to continue her campaign despite Trump’s victory in the New Hampshire primary. Trump’s 11-point lead over Haley in this primary put him in a favorable position to secure the Republican nomination for a third consecutive election cycle.
Trump, known for his direct and often controversial statements, referred to Haley as “Birdbrain” in his post. He criticized her for making false statements and derogatory comments, and for suffering a humiliating public loss, which he viewed as demeaning to true American patriots. He also downplayed her role in his administration, stating that she was “average at best” and not capable of taking on world leaders.
In response to her loss in New Hampshire, Haley immediately shifted her focus to South Carolina, where she held a rally in North Charleston. Despite trailing Trump by 30-40% in the polls in South Carolina, Haley is investing heavily in the state, launching a $4 million ad campaign. Mark Harris, lead strategist of Stand For America PAC, acknowledged Haley’s underdog status but remained optimistic about closing the gap with Trump.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden, who won the New Hampshire primary through a write-in campaign, viewed Trump’s victory as evidence that the 2024 presidential election would be a rematch between the two. Biden emphasized the high stakes of the upcoming election, highlighting the importance of democracy and personal freedoms.
Trump’s ultimatum to donors represents a significant move in the intensifying GOP primary race, signaling his commitment to maintaining a united front within the MAGA camp. As the primary season progresses, the dynamics within the Republican Party continue to evolve, with Trump and Haley representing contrasting visions for the party’s future.
