A New York federal court was the scene of intense drama during the defamation trial involving former President Donald Trump, brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan notably threatened to jail Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, during a heated exchange over a disputed slide presentation.

The dispute arose when Carroll’s legal team objected to a slide that Trump’s team intended to show the jury, arguing that its contents had not been entered into evidence. Habba’s insistence led to a tense moment with Judge Kaplan, who warned her, “You are on the verge of spending some time in the lockup,” prompting her immediate compliance.

Further adding to the courtroom drama, Trump reportedly exited the courtroom abruptly during Carroll’s team’s closing arguments. Judge Kaplan remarked on the record, “The record will reflect that Mr. Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom.” Trump, however, returned about an hour later to observe his own legal team’s closing arguments.

The trial’s closing arguments were particularly significant, as Trump had already been found liable for defamation. Carroll’s legal team increased their demand for damages from the initially sought $10 million to $24 million during the final statements. Habba, representing Trump, countered that the case was misdirected, focusing instead on online trolls rather than Trump’s direct actions.

This day in court showcased the high-stakes and emotionally charged nature of the legal proceedings. Trump’s reaction and the judge’s stern warning to his attorney reflect the contentious atmosphere surrounding the case. The outcome of the trial, which seeks to determine the compensation owed to Carroll, is awaited with keen interest.
