Following a resolution by the City Council to contract law enforcement services with the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, the city of Moose Lake, Minnesota, decided to dissolve its entire police department, as reported on Thursday. The vote’s result, which signaled a dramatic change in the city’s public safety strategy, disappointed Mayor Ted Shaw.
Budgetary issues are said to have played a role in the decision to get into a contract with the county. In order to provide funding for the entire department, the City Council had already lowered the size of the police force last fall. But when two more police quit in January, leaving just one officer on the force, things became worse.
Moose Lake’s 2024 budget, according to municipal administrator Ellissa Owens, was largely devoted to public safety. Approximately $900,000 went toward funding a five-person police force as well as part-time administrative support.
The decision in Moose Lake to dissolve the police force is indicative of a larger trend in Minnesota. Goodhue, a small city in the state’s southeast, lost its entire police force when its chief and other department officials resigned in August.
Assuring locals that police coverage in the city would not be jeopardized, Goodhue Mayor Ellen Anderson Buck highlighted resilience and desire to go forward in response to the loss of the police department.
Because of its diverse population, Moose Lake, which is well-known for housing inmates from the Minnesota Correctional Facility and members of the Minnesota Sex Offender Program, faces particular challenges. Both of these groups make up about half of the city’s population.
In his remarks, Mayor Shaw attributed the state’s police agency closures to issues with inflation, financial restraints, and government assistance. Fox News Digital reached out to the Moose Lake Police Department and Mayor Shaw for comment, but neither agency responded. The decision to dissolve the Moose Lake police department highlights concerns about the continuous difficulties that local governments encounter in preserving law enforcement capabilities in the face of a variety of operational and financial limitations.
