In a tragic turn of events during the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade, a deadly shooting unfolded, leaving one person dead and nearly two dozen injured. Authorities revealed that the incident stemmed from a personal dispute that escalated into violence, and three individuals have been detained in connection with the incident.
Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves, in a press conference on Thursday, emphasized that the shooting had no links to homegrown terrorism or violent extremism. Instead, it appeared to be a dispute among several individuals that tragically culminated in gunfire. Graves disclosed that two of the three suspects are juveniles, and the police department had 24 hours to either charge or release them.
“We have subjects that are detained,” Graves stated. “We are working to determine the involvement of others, and it should be noted we have recovered several firearms. This incident is still a very active investigation.”
The victims, numbering 22, included nine children, with 43-year-old Lisa Lopez-Galvan losing her life to a gunshot wound to the abdomen. A dedicated Chiefs fan, she was remembered as “the most wonderful, beautiful person” by a longtime friend.
Eight of the wounded were initially in critical condition when first responders arrived, according to Ross Grundyson, chief of the city fire department. Another seven were in serious condition, while six had minor injuries. The mass shooting disrupted what should have been a joyous celebration of the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl victory, turning the parade into a scene of chaos.
Graves expressed gratitude for the swift response of the Kansas City Fire Department, highlighting their preparedness for such incidents. She also commended civilians who assisted law enforcement during the chaotic situation, acknowledging their selfless acts.
Despite the presence of approximately 800 uniformed law enforcement officers during the parade, the tragic event unfolded. Graves expressed anger over the situation, stating, “Because of bad actors, which were very few, this tragedy occurred.”
Video footage circulating on social media showed a heroic Chiefs fan tackling a person who may have been a gunman before the police took them into custody. Graves commended such civilian assistance and urged a thorough investigation into the perpetrators’ connections and any potential links to earlier crimes in the area.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, the police chief reiterated their commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. The incident has left victims and witnesses in shock, with one survivor, Jacob Gooch Sr., describing the chaos as “crazy” and expressing disbelief at the tragic turn of events.
