In a recent appearance on “The View,” ABC News’ Chief Medical Correspondent was asked about President Biden’s physical capability to fulfill the presidential duties given his age of 81 years. Despite the release of Biden’s physical exam results declaring him fit for presidency, the correspondent, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, refrained from giving a definitive opinion on his physical fitness for the office, citing her role as a journalist rather than Biden’s personal doctor. She pointed out certain aspects that were not covered in the public report, such as a neurologic evaluation, mental health screening, and cognitive testing, which are typically part of a comprehensive physical examination.

Dr. Ashton highlighted that while the report, as per Biden’s physician, seemed thorough, it lacked information on several standard assessment areas, which raised questions about its comprehensiveness. The conversation on the show also touched on the notion of Biden’s ability to perform his presidential duties, with co-host Joy Behar suggesting that the physical exam results indicated he could. However, Ashton maintained her stance of not being in a position to comment on his health specifics due to her not being his physician.

The White House had earlier shared that Biden underwent his annual physical exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, with results released by Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the Physician to the President. The summary of the exam described President Biden as a “healthy, active 81-year-old male” who is “fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency.”

This discussion comes amidst heightened scrutiny of Biden’s health, especially considering his bid for a second term in 2024. The president’s physical abilities, particularly his gait, have been a point of public observation, though his physician reported no significant changes in the past year. Additionally, the White House confirmed that a cognitive test was not included in Biden’s recent physical exam, further fueling debates on the comprehensive assessment of his fitness for the presidential role.
