In a recent incident that has sparked widespread concern, Philadelphia’s LGBTQ Affairs Director, Celena Morrison, and her husband, Darius McLean, were involved in a contentious encounter with law enforcement on a Philadelphia highway. The episode, which was captured on video, has raised questions about the use of force by police.
Celena Morrison, 51, who serves as the Executive Director of Mayor Cherelle Parker’s Office of LGBT Affairs, and her husband, Darius McLean, 35, the Chief Operating Officer of the William Way Community Center, found themselves in a distressing situation during a traffic stop on Interstate 76. The couple was stopped for what was described as “multiple vehicle code violations.”
The situation escalated when McLean, who had pulled over behind Morrison, was approached by an unidentified Pennsylvania state trooper. According to reports, McLean became verbally confrontational, leading to the trooper attempting to arrest him. Morrison, in the midst of the altercation, can be heard in the video pleading for her husband and asserting her affiliation with the mayor’s office.
The encounter took a turn for the worse when the trooper, in response to Morrison’s protests, told her to “Shut the f–k up.” Morrison, notable for being the first openly transgender person to lead a city department in Philadelphia, and McLean both claimed that the arrest was racially motivated, a claim the trooper denied.
Despite the couple’s protests, both were arrested and faced charges including resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, and disorderly conduct. However, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office later declined to pursue these charges pending further review.
The video of the incident, shared widely on social media, has drawn criticism and concern from the public and officials alike. Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed her concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. City Councilmember Rue Landau also commented on the footage, describing it as “alarming” and indicative of a “deeply disturbing interaction.”
This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing debate over police conduct and the use of force, particularly in interactions with minority communities. The absence of body cam footage from the trooper, though his cruiser was equipped with a video recorder, leaves unanswered questions about the entirety of the encounter. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, as the community and officials await further details.
