Biden Admin Faces Backlash of Using Taxpayer Money for Student Voter Registration

The Biden administration has come under scrutiny for a new initiative that involves compensating college students for voter registration activities, a move that critics argue could be leveraging taxpayer funds to support the President’s re-election campaign. This program, announced by Vice President Kamala Harris, allows students participating in the federal work-study program to be paid for registering voters and serving as nonpartisan poll workers.

During a meeting with voting rights activists, Harris highlighted the importance of this initiative, emphasizing its role in encouraging young people to become more involved in the democratic process. The administration’s effort aims to bolster voter turnout by engaging students in civic activities, according to Harris.

However, this initiative has sparked controversy and allegations of misuse of government resources for political gain. Jason Snead, Executive Director of the Honest Elections Project, accused the administration of “weaponizing the federal government” to support its re-election by paying “overwhelmingly liberal college students” for voter registration efforts. Snead’s concerns were echoed by Hans A. von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation, who described the initiative as an “outrageous abuse of power” and a potential violation of the Hatch Act and the Anti-Deficiency Act, which govern the use of taxpayer funds and federal employees’ political activities.

The Department of Education issued a memo clarifying that federal work-study funds could be utilized for employment in civic engagement activities, including voter registration, provided they are not associated with any particular interest or group. This clarification has done little to quell the criticism from some quarters, with Tennessee Republican Senator Bill Hagerty and others accusing the Biden administration of using government resources to selectively mobilize voters in favor of the Democratic Party.

Vice President Harris’s announcement and subsequent social media posts praising poll workers have further fueled the debate, with critics pointing to the partisan backgrounds of some individuals highlighted as “nonpartisan” poll workers. The administration’s efforts to promote voter participation through this program have thus become a contentious issue, raising questions about the intersection of government resources, voter mobilization, and political campaigning as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
