Trump’s Lawyers Seek New Trial in Defamation Suit by E. Jean Carroll

Former President Donald Trump’s legal team has filed motions for a new trial in the case brought against him by E. Jean Carroll, arguing that limitations placed on his testimony during the previous trial unfairly restricted his defense. The motions, submitted on a Tuesday night, seek either a judgment in Trump’s favor or a complete retrial of the case. These legal moves come in the wake of a federal jury’s decision last month, which ordered Trump to compensate Carroll over $83 million in damages for claims of rape in the 1990s, which he has consistently denied.

Trump’s attorneys contend that Carroll’s legal team failed to prove that Trump’s denials of the allegations caused her any harm. They argue that the jury’s substantial award was based on confusion or bias rather than the evidence presented during the trial. Trump’s legal representatives believe the jury’s verdict was heavily influenced by the court’s decision to limit Trump’s ability to testify, particularly regarding statements he made in defense of his reputation, his family, and his presidency.

In response to the verdict, Trump voiced his disagreement and intention to appeal, denouncing the legal proceedings as a politically motivated witch hunt. He maintained his innocence, expressing his view that the rulings against him were unjust and an abuse of the legal system for political ends.

The jury had found Trump liable not for rape but for sexual abuse and defamation, awarding Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. Carroll had initially sought $12 million for what she claimed was a reputational harm resulting from Trump’s public denials of her allegations. These allegations stem from an incident Carroll says took place at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in 1996.

The case has ignited significant public and media attention, highlighting the ongoing legal battles faced by the former president as he remains a prominent figure in American politics. Trump’s legal team’s latest move signals a continued fight in the courts, as they seek to overturn or reduce the jury’s decision. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the court will respond to the motions for a new trial and whether Trump’s legal challenges will result in a different outcome in this high-profile case.
