Chaya Raichik, the well-known conservative social media personality and creator of “Libs of TikTok,” recently voiced her displeasure with Southwest Airlines. Raichik’s grievance centered on her travel experience, during which she claimed that the bulkhead of a person next to her pushed her into an uncomfortable seat. With over 500,000 followers, Raichik’s personal X (formerly Twitter) account serves as a record of her experience. She said, “I’m sitting on a flight squished into the corner because this massive obese guy is taking up half my seat.” I did not pay for half of the seat; I paid for the whole seat.

Her piece received millions of views and swiftly became well-known around the globe. It included a photo illustrating the extent of her seatmate’s encroachment on her personal space. The conditions, according to Raichik, were egregiously against Southwest Airlines’ “customers of size” policy. This policy, which was implemented the previous year, aims to accommodate overweight passengers by allowing them to book an extra seat at no additional cost if their body extends over the armrest into the seat next to them.

The outspoken activist didn’t hold back in her online criticism, openly voicing her disgust on the social media platform and used derogatory terminology to further describe her seatmate’s behavior. Following her first tweets, Raichik claimed to have gotten a call from Southwest Airlines, which expressed regret and gave her a $150 voucher good for future travel. But Raichik decided not to fly with the airline again because he thought the payment was insufficient.

In following posts, Raichik expanded on her plan to never fly with Southwest Airlines again, citing the incident and her overall perception of the airline’s quality of customer service as factors in her decision. She said that previous experiences and the current occurrence supported her decision to travel with other airlines instead than Southwest, even if it meant making longer pauses.

This incident has sparked discussions online about airline policies, passenger comfort, and the responsibilities of individual passengers as well as airlines. Raichik’s experience serves as a reminder of the ongoing conversations about the issues surrounding proper airline travel behavior as well as the precautions taken to ensure that each passenger has a pleasurable journey.
