Poll: Trump Leads Biden in Swing States, Voters Cite Mental Fitness as Top Concern

In a recent Wall Street Journal survey, Donald Trump is leading Joe Biden in six critical swing states as the 2024 presidential election approaches. This shift is notable, given that, except for North Carolina, these states played a pivotal role in Biden’s victory over Trump in the previous election. The survey underscores growing concerns among voters regarding Biden’s mental acuity, economic leadership, and immigration policies.

Trump’s edge over Biden spans Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada. In these states, Trump’s lead ranges from narrow margins to figures exceeding the poll’s four-point margin of error. Wisconsin presents a unique case where Biden and Trump are tied in a direct matchup, though Biden gains a slight advantage when third-party candidates are considered.

The survey signals a potential weakening in the coalition of Black, Hispanic, and young voters that bolstered Biden’s 2020 campaign. Current support among these groups has seen a significant drop, indicating a shift in voter sentiment since the last presidential election.

Amidst these dynamics, independent and third-party candidates, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are drawing attention. Kennedy, in particular, has secured ballot access in North Carolina and has the Green Party appearing on ballots in several of the surveyed states.

Voter dissatisfaction with Biden’s performance is evident across all seven swing states surveyed, with negative ratings surpassing 16 percentage points. In contrast, Trump received negative job performance ratings in only Arizona among the states polled.

When it comes to specific issues, Trump is perceived as the better candidate for managing the economy and border security, with a majority of swing-state voters favoring him on these fronts. Conversely, Biden is preferred on the issue of abortion, reflecting the diverse priorities of the electorate.

The poll also highlighted a general sense of economic pessimism among voters in these states, with a majority expressing concerns about the economy’s direction and their personal financial situations. This sentiment is contributing to Biden’s challenges as he seeks reelection, with the economy and inflation being top concerns for voters.

This Wall Street Journal survey, conducted from March 17 to 24, involved 4,200 registered voters across the seven battleground states, providing a detailed snapshot of the electoral landscape as the 2024 election looms.
