Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is calling on the city’s wealthiest residents to help tackle the escalating homelessness crisis through a new initiative aimed at acquiring permanent housing for the homeless population. During her State of the City address, Bass outlined the dire situation on the streets of Los Angeles, where over 40,000 individuals currently lack stable housing.
Mayor Bass highlighted the achievements of her “Inside Safe” program, which has successfully moved more than 21,000 homeless people into temporary shelters. This initiative is part of her broader strategy to transition these individuals from temporary to permanent housing. Recognizing the financial challenges associated with this transition, she urged affluent Angelenos to contribute financially to expedite the process of purchasing properties for the homeless.
The new fundraising campaign, named LA4LA, seeks to foster an “unprecedented partnership” between the city and private sector contributions to address what Bass described as a disaster-level crisis affecting all city residents. This crisis has not only led to a visible increase in homelessness but has also driven businesses away, strained city resources, and raised safety concerns throughout Los Angeles.
Despite the billions of dollars already spent on tackling homelessness, the number continues to rise, exacerbated by factors such as evictions and the cessation of COVID-19 aid that had previously helped low-income households. The recent 9% increase in the homeless population across Los Angeles County underscores the urgency of finding lasting solutions.
This appeal for a private-public partnership is part of Mayor Bass’s larger vision to disrupt the status quo and create a new system that not only saves lives but also restores dignity and stability to the city’s most vulnerable residents.
