Planet Fitness Enlists New CEO to Focus on DEI Amid Backlash Over Trans Locker Room Rule

Planet Fitness has appointed Colleen Keating as its new CEO, focusing on enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the company. This strategic move comes after the gym chain faced significant backlash and a substantial decrease in market value due to controversies surrounding its transgender locker room policy.

Previously the head of FirstKey Homes, Keating has a strong background in promoting DEI initiatives. She has publicly committed to advancing these values in the workplace and broader community, emphasizing the integration of DEI principles as core to corporate culture rather than viewing them as mere programs.

The controversy began intensifying after an incident where a woman complained about a transgender individual using the women’s locker room, leading to her membership being revoked for violating the gym’s privacy rules. This incident was part of a series of events that sparked debates over privacy and safety in locker rooms, contributing to a boycott and a $400 million drop in Planet Fitness’s market value.

Planet Fitness’s policy allows members to use locker room facilities corresponding to their self-reported gender identity. This policy aims to support inclusivity but has also led to criticism and complex challenges for the gym chain.

Keating’s appointment is seen as a step towards addressing these challenges by bolstering the company’s commitment to inclusivity and operational excellence. Planet Fitness aims to navigate the delicate balance between fostering an inclusive environment and addressing members’ concerns under Keating’s leadership. Her tenure as CEO will begin on June 10, replacing Chris Rondeau, with the company’s board expressing confidence in her ability to lead the organization through its next growth phase.
