South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has sparked controversy with revelations from her upcoming memoir, “No Going Back,” where she recounts the circumstances leading her to euthanize her dog, Cricket, and a problematic goat. The memoir, which aims to showcase her readiness to make tough decisions, includes detailed accounts of these incidents, emphasizing her hands-on approach to problem-solving, even when it involves harsh realities of farm life.

Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehair pointer, was described by Noem as having an aggressive personality that rendered her untrainable. The situation escalated during a hunting trip, where Cricket’s overly excited behavior led her to attack chickens, and subsequently, attempt to bite Noem. Concluding that Cricket was a danger to others, Noem made the difficult decision to put her down. She recalls leading Cricket to a gravel pit, where she performed the act—a moment that left a significant impression on her daughter, who later inquired about the missing dog.

In a similar vein, Noem recounts her decision to kill a male goat that had not been castrated and had become a nuisance on her property. The goat, described as “nasty and mean,” frequently chased and knocked down her children. After an unsuccessful first attempt, Noem returned with another shell to ensure the goat was euthanized, illustrating her resolve in dealing with farm management challenges.

Noem’s narrative in the memoir not only addresses these specific incidents but also ties them to broader themes of political and personal responsibility. She uses these stories to argue that leadership often requires facing “difficult, messy and ugly” tasks head-on.

The release of these excerpts has led to varied reactions from the public and media, with some critics deeming her actions harsh while others see them as a straightforward depiction of farm life realities. Noem herself has responded to the backlash by highlighting that such decisions are commonplace in rural settings and emphasizing her commitment to transparency and real-life storytelling in her book.

These revelations come at a time when Noem is being considered as a potential vice-presidential candidate alongside Donald Trump for the upcoming election, placing her actions and decision-making style under greater scrutiny.
