Queens’ Residents Say Migrant Shelter Has Disrupted Peace Since January

Residents of a New York City migrant shelter are voicing their frustration over escalating disturbances within the facility, where they report the emergence of a “teen fight club” and continuous shouting that have made living conditions unbearable. Shelter inhabitants have described a growing atmosphere of chaos and disorder, with many feeling unsafe due to frequent altercations among groups of teenagers.

According to multiple accounts from those staying at the shelter, there have been numerous incidents of physical fights involving young residents. These confrontations often break out in common areas, leading to a heightened sense of tension and insecurity. One resident lamented the shelter’s descent into disarray, explaining that the environment has become more like a battleground, where the noise of shouting and fighting rarely ceases.

Witnesses have detailed how these fights appear to be organized by some of the teenagers, who gather to watch or participate in the brawls. “It’s like a fight club for these kids,” one shelter occupant said, expressing concern over the safety risks and lack of control. Despite repeated complaints to shelter staff, residents claim that little has been done to curb the disruptive behavior.

The constant noise has also become a significant issue for those living in the shelter. Many report being unable to sleep or concentrate due to the persistent screaming and yelling throughout the day and night. One shelter resident described the relentless noise as “shrieking,” noting that the disturbances have severely affected their mental well-being.

Some residents have called for immediate action from city officials, urging them to intervene and restore order to the shelter. They argue that the shelter’s current management is failing to address the ongoing issues and that stronger measures are needed to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for all occupants.

City authorities have yet to comment publicly on the complaints, but the situation underscores the challenges faced in managing large migrant shelters, particularly when resources are stretched thin, and there are mixed demographics, including minors and families.

The rising tensions and deteriorating conditions have fueled concerns about the safety and well-being of all shelter residents. Many are now calling for increased security measures and better oversight to prevent further disturbances, protect vulnerable individuals, and bring a sense of calm back to the shelter community.
