A former University of Kentucky staff member, Betsy Packard, is facing significant backlash after suggesting on social media that the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene was divine punishment aimed at supporters of former President Donald Trump. In a controversial post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Packard questioned whether the hurricane, which has claimed over 100 lives across multiple states, was “God punishing MAGA populations for their hate and hypocrisy.”
The storm, which struck Florida’s Big Bend region before sweeping through several southern states, caused widespread destruction. Many saw Packard’s comments as heartless, particularly given the scale of human suffering caused by the hurricane. Despite receiving immediate criticism online, Packard doubled down on her statements, exchanging barbs with users and continuing to suggest that the hurricane was an act of divine retribution.
As the controversy grew, the University of Kentucky responded by disavowing Packard’s remarks. A university spokesperson confirmed that Packard was no longer affiliated with the institution, despite her social media profile listing her as a former staff member. The spokesperson described her comments as “abhorrent” and stressed that they did not align with the values of the university.
Although Packard later attempted to walk back her initial post by claiming she was simply posing a hypothetical question, the damage was already done. Her remarks continued to draw criticism, with many social media users denouncing her for insensitivity toward the victims of the hurricane. The University of Kentucky removed her profile from its website following the incident.
