New York City’s First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright is expected to resign, marking another high-profile departure from Mayor Eric Adams’ administration amidst mounting turmoil. Wright’s exit comes just a month after federal authorities raided the home she shares with her husband, outgoing Schools Chancellor David Banks. Sources indicate that Wright is being forced out, with Governor Kathy Hochul pressuring Adams to clean house following his indictment on federal charges.

Wright, who oversees the city’s budget, finance offices, and key agencies, has publicly denied her impending resignation, but City Hall insiders confirm that discussions are underway. This follows the surprise early removal of her husband, David Banks, from his role as schools chancellor, an event that reportedly blindsided him.

Wright’s replacement is expected to be announced soon, with candidates including Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and Camille Joseph Varlack, Adams’ chief of staff. Wright’s and Banks’ exits follow federal probes into Adams’ administration, with accusations involving defrauding taxpayers and receiving bribes. Both Wright and Banks had their electronic devices seized during the investigation, although the specifics of the probe remain unclear.

This latest development adds to the challenges faced by Mayor Adams, who is under pressure to stabilize his administration amidst ongoing legal issues.
