Trump Calls for Legendary Hockey Player to be Canadian Prime Minister

Former President Donald Trump took a swipe at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a holiday-themed political rally, suggesting a bold vision for Canada as the United States’ 51st state. Trump’s comments included a promise to lower taxes for Canadians and an endorsement of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as a potential leader of the country.

During the rally, Trump criticized Trudeau’s policies, claiming they have negatively impacted Canadian citizens. “Canada deserves better leadership, and maybe it’s time to bring them into the greatest country on earth,” he told the cheering crowd. “We’ll cut their taxes, and they’ll finally get the representation they deserve.”

Trump’s remarks, intended to mock Trudeau, also included praise for Gretzky, who he said would make an excellent leader. “Wayne Gretzky—a true legend. He’s the kind of guy who could unite Canada and bring real change,” Trump quipped.

While the comments were largely viewed as tongue-in-cheek, they sparked mixed reactions north of the border. Critics dismissed Trump’s statements as political theater, while some supporters applauded his focus on economic policies.

Trudeau’s office has not responded to the remarks, but Canadian political observers note that Trump’s comments highlight ongoing tensions between the two leaders. During Trump’s presidency, relations between the U.S. and Canada occasionally faced strain over trade agreements and policy differences.

Meanwhile, Gretzky has not weighed in on the suggestion, but fans of the hockey icon took to social media with a mix of humor and speculation about what a “Prime Minister Gretzky” might look like.

As the lighthearted comments make waves in both countries, they underline Trump’s ability to stir controversy and conversation on both sides of the border, even when out of office.
