Maine Governor Janet Mills has responded to former President Donald Trump’s demand for an apology regarding the state’s transgender athlete policies, defending her administration’s stance and refusing to back down. The dispute stems from Trump’s criticism of Maine’s support for allowing transgender athletes to compete in sports based on gender identity, which he claims is unfair to female athletes.

During a recent public appearance, Trump called on Mills to apologize to women and girls across Maine, accusing the state’s policies of undermining the integrity of women’s sports. He argued that biological males competing in female divisions create an uneven playing field and demanded that the governor reverse course.

Mills pushed back against Trump’s remarks, stating that Maine remains committed to ensuring equality and protecting the rights of all students, including transgender athletes. She emphasized that the state’s policies are designed to promote inclusivity and comply with anti-discrimination laws.

The governor defended the current guidelines as fair and consistent with Maine values, rejecting claims that they weaken competition or harm female athletes. Mills also dismissed Trump’s comments as politically motivated, vowing not to allow outside pressure to dictate the state’s approach to school athletics.

The clash highlights the ongoing national debate over transgender participation in sports, with Maine now at the center of a broader political battle over gender identity, fairness, and student rights.
