The death toll from the catastrophic roof collapse at a nightclub in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, has climbed to 66, as emergency crews continue to recover bodies from the debris and treat dozens of critically injured survivors.

The collapse occurred during a well-attended evening event at the venue, which was reportedly filled beyond its normal capacity. Witnesses described hearing a loud crack before the roof caved in, trapping patrons under concrete and steel. Rescue operations extended into the early morning hours, with authorities deploying specialized teams to search for any remaining survivors.

Officials confirmed that 66 people lost their lives in the tragedy, making it one of the deadliest structural failures in the country’s recent history. Over 100 others were injured, many of whom remain hospitalized with severe injuries.

Initial investigations point to possible structural deficiencies and overcrowding as contributing factors. The venue, known for hosting live music and large gatherings, is now under scrutiny as authorities review permits, maintenance records, and past safety inspections.

President Luis Abinader has declared a period of national mourning and vowed full accountability. He also ordered immediate inspections of similar establishments across the country to prevent future tragedies.

Family members of the victims have begun to identify their loved ones, and memorials are being planned throughout the region. Local officials are working closely with the community to provide support services for those affected.

As forensic teams continue their work at the scene, investigators are expected to release a preliminary report in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic grapples with the emotional and societal impact of a disaster that has shocked the nation.
