The detention of a woman accused of violent criminal charges by ICE agents was obstructed by a throng of residents in Worcester, resulting in a federal immigration operation that descended into chaos. The May 8 incident rapidly escalated, resulting in two arrests and renewed scrutiny of immigration enforcement in the city.
A group of approximately 25 individuals encircled the agents’ SUV, exclaiming and attempting to prevent it from departing, as evidenced by video footage from the scene. A baby was being held by a teenage girl, who is suspected to be the daughter of the detained mother, who stood in front of the vehicle. She continued to obstruct the vehicle after transferring the infant to another individual and was subsequently apprehended. She is currently being charged with resisting arrest and negligent endangerment.
Ashley Spring, a candidate for the local school committee, was also apprehended. According to reports, she allegedly pushed officers and hurled a liquid at them. Among other offenses, she was charged with assault and battery on law enforcement.
City Councilor Etel Haxhiaj was also present during the confrontation and has since been accused by the police union of inciting the crowd and interfering with officers. The union is advocating for an ethics investigation into her actions.
Ferreira de Oliveira, an undocumented immigrant, was identified as the woman detained by ICE. She is purportedly facing numerous violent charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a pregnant woman.
The gathering was classified as an unlawful assembly by the local police, who intervened to provide assistance to the federal agents. Worcester’s mayor has requested a comprehensive report on the incident, as tensions persist regarding the role of federal immigration enforcement in the community. City officials are currently conducting a review of the event.
