Chaos broke out at Brass Mill Center in Waterbury, Connecticut, after a shooting left five people injured during a crowded afternoon at the mall.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. near the center court and was sparked by an altercation between two groups. Nineteen-year-old Tajuan Washington was taken into custody shortly after the attack. Police confirmed he used a semi-automatic pistol and opened fire in what investigators believe was a targeted act rather than a random assault.

All five victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Law enforcement responded quickly, securing the mall and assisting shoppers in evacuating the premises.

Washington now faces multiple charges, including five counts of first-degree assault and several firearms-related offenses. Police said more charges may follow as the investigation continues.

The incident has prompted renewed discussions about security in public spaces and gun violence prevention as officials review surveillance footage and gather witness statements.
