A wave of coordinated ICE raids across Los Angeles has triggered intense backlash, protests, and clashes with law enforcement, as Trump administration officials sharply criticized Mayor Karen Bass for her response.

Federal immigration agents arrested 44 individuals in a series of early morning operations targeting locations including businesses in the Fashion District and several Home Depot stores. The raids sparked immediate protests, with crowds gathering outside detention centers and work sites to oppose the arrests.

Mayor Karen Bass condemned the raids, calling them fear-driven tactics that undermine public trust and community safety. Her remarks drew strong rebukes from the Trump administration, with senior officials asserting that the enforcement of immigration laws is solely a federal matter and warning local leaders not to obstruct operations.

Tensions escalated throughout the day as protesters clashed with police. Officers deployed flash-bangs and tear gas after demonstrations turned aggressive in downtown Los Angeles. Among those detained during the unrest was David Huerta, president of SEIU California, who was reportedly arrested for obstructing federal agents.

California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, also criticized the raids as politically motivated and unnecessarily aggressive. The events have reignited the debate over the balance between federal authority and local resistance in sanctuary cities, with both sides standing firm on their stance.

The aftermath leaves Los Angeles at the center of a national storm over immigration policy, civil rights, and the limits of local governance in the face of federal enforcement.
