Authorities have confirmed that the man suspected of ambushing and killing two firefighters on Canfield Mountain in Idaho has been found dead near a firearm, hours after the attack. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Wess Roley, is believed to have deliberately set a fire to lure emergency responders to the scene before opening fire from a concealed vantage point.
The attack left two firefighters dead and another injured. Law enforcement agencies, including local police and federal authorities, launched an intensive search, tracing the suspect through phone signals. Roley was later discovered deceased in a wooded area near the crime scene. Preliminary findings suggest a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound, although investigators are also examining the possibility he was struck by return fire.
Roley had no significant criminal history but had previously worked in forestry-related jobs and reportedly aspired to become a firefighter. His motive remains under investigation. The community was temporarily placed under a shelter-in-place order, which has since been lifted.
The ambush has sparked outrage and mourning across the state, with officials describing the act as a targeted and premeditated assault on public servants. The injured firefighter is recovering in stable condition. Multiple agencies continue to investigate the suspect’s background, weapons, and any signs of broader intent.
