Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has signed a sweeping executive order aimed at safeguarding immigrant communities in the wake of recent federal enforcement operations. The directive instructs all city departments to adopt sanctuary-aligned procedures and train personnel on how to respond to immigration enforcement on municipal property.
A new task force, led by the LAPD, has been formed to establish clear protocols for city employees and law enforcement officers who may encounter federal agents during active operations. The goal is to ensure consistency in the city’s response and uphold Los Angeles’ sanctuary commitments. In a bold move, the city is also demanding greater transparency from federal agencies by filing Freedom of Information requests. These seek detailed data about recent ICE activities, including the identities of those detained, associated costs, and justification for the actions. To provide direct support to those affected, the mayor announced a cash assistance program funded entirely by private donors. Eligible immigrant families impacted by ICE raids will receive prepaid cards loaded with several hundred dollars. These cards will be distributed through local advocacy organizations and are set to be issued in the coming days. The announcement follows public outcry over federal actions in places like MacArthur Park and a Ventura County cannabis farm. Bass said the measures are necessary to protect families, preserve trust in local institutions, and push back against what she called harmful federal overreach. The new order escalates tensions between city leaders and federal immigration authorities, setting the stage for further legal and political battles over how enforcement should be carried out in sanctuary cities.
