Rep. Mark Green (R–Tenn.), Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, has officially stepped down, effective July 20, to pursue a private-sector opportunity. His departure follows the recent passage of President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
Green, a former Army surgeon and West Point graduate, served Tennessee’s 7th District since 2019. He remained in office to ensure final passage of the tax-and-border reconciliation package, which he supported. With his exit, the Republican majority in the House narrows to 219–212, heightening the importance of every vote on upcoming legislation.
Governor Bill Lee will now schedule a special election to fill the vacancy in this safely Republican district, with primary voting expected in October and a general election in December. Green’s last official act was casting a vote for the Trump-backed spending package. He has endorsed Army veteran Matt Van Epps as his likely successor.
This resignation underscores the fragile state of GOP control in the House and raises the stakes for future votes and narrow legislative margins.
